The post-Covid norm

The Choir’s highly extended break owing to Covid-19, and the significant reduction to the number of services sung since returning have caused much upset and disruption – for those who attended Mass at The Carmelite Priory and were uplifted spiritually by the music, and for the Choir’s singers who have been faced with significant loss of earnings. More than half the Choir members found it necessary to depart during this hiatus to take up more secure work at other churches. It has not been feasible to return to the innovative project-based music planning for which the Choir was known. In fact, simply ensuring that each service is viable has necessitated a service by service approach. Hope remains that, in time, resources might allow the Choir to contribute to the church’s liturgy in a manner more similar to its multi-year history, and that increased regularity might provide greater security to singers and the opportunity for more innovative music planning. For now, we must consider ourselves fortunate that professional music continues with some regulatiry at the church; the foundations remain for when rebuilding becomes possible.
